What is Meditation?

There are many different kinds of practices that are referred to as “meditation.”

In Shambhala, we follow the Buddhist tradition of meditation that has been taught for over 2,500 years as a way to experience the beauty and sanity of the ordinary world as it is… without aggression or manipulation.

Meditation is not a blank state devoid of thoughts or emotions, but rather the natural state of mind at rest — open and alert in the present moment. It is a path not only to understanding our own humanity, but also to cultivating a good society on this earth.

About Meditation Instruction

Mindfulness/awareness meditation is the foundation of all that we do at our Shambhala Meditation Centres. We train our mind to be calm by sitting in stillness and placing our awareness on our body and breath.

Meditation instruction is available to anyone, free of charge. In Tatamagouche at Sunrise House we offer introductory instruction to newcomers by appointment. Please email Madeline Conacher to arrange a meeting with a meditation instructor.

Follow-up instruction, talks and classes that help us understand how to relate to our mind and emotions are also offered by the Tatamagouche Shambhala Meditation Group and Dorje Denma Ling. Please check our schedule and the Dorje Denma Ling website (April through October) for more information.
